The City of Powell has a long history that can be traced back to the beginning of the 19th century. Powell was settled before Ohio was officially established as a state. and it was named after Thomas Powell, a judge who established the community's first post office. Although Powell was settled early in the 1800's, it didn't officially become an incorporated municipality until the mid-20th century. Powell's population began growing significantly at the end of the 1980's as suburban development around Columbus began burgeoning. Even since only 2000, the population of Powell has grown enormously, almost doubling in only about 12 years between 2000 to 2012. 

Shopping and Dining

The Mall at Tuttle Crossing is located about 17 minutes from Powell in Dublin. This mall includes retail shopping opportunities for clothing, home goods, electronics, and more. Department stores located at The Mall at Tuttle Crossing include Sears, Macy's, and JCPenney. Other shopping centers located nearby include Northern Lights Shopping Center on Cleveland Avenue in Columbus and The Shops at Worthington Place on North High Street in Worthington. 

Popular Powell fine dining restaurants include Vittoria Ristorante on Sawmill Parkway, Bogey Bar & Grill on Glick Road, and Liberty Tavern on South Liberty Street. El Vaquero is a great place to grab a spicy Mexican meal, and those in the mood for a hearty burger can head to Smashburger on Owenfield Drive. Murphy Park on Charles Spring Drive is one of the major parks located in Powell. This park includes two playgrounds and areas for picnicking and walking. Another natural area located near the center of Powell is Emily Traphagen Preserve, which includes wetlands, ponds, tall trees, wildlife, and more. There are also a lot of opportunities for outdoor recreation at O'Shaughenessy Reservoir Park, located along the banks of the O'Shaughnessy Reservoir to the northwest of Powell. 

Carriage Place Recreation Center on Bethel Road in Columbus is one of the closest recreation centers. Carriage Place offers organized sports such as basketball, soccer, tennis, and volleyball. In addition, this recreation center features an art room, a ceramics room, dance study, a fitness room, and a walking trail. The Carriage Place Recreation Center in Columbus is open every day of the week except Sundays and Mondays.
